DHARAMSHALA: Dorjee Rinchen, a 57-year-old Tibetan man set himself on fire in front of the local police station in Sangchu county, north-eastern Tibet around 04:30 pm (local time) today. He died on the spot. This is the third incident of self-immolation in Sangchu county in four days.
He is a native of Labrang Zayul region in Amdo.
Local Tibetans who witnessed the incident prevented the Chinese police from taking away his body. A photo show his charred body covered with traditional Tibetan scarves.
A huge number of Chinese troops were deployed around the area after the incident. Phone lines and Internet connectivity has been cut off.
Over 58 Tibetans have set themselves on fire protesting against the Chinese government, calling for freedom and the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet.
