A Tibetan monk living in Australia is appealing for help in the search for his niece, who has been missing in his homeland for nearly a month.
Geshe Sonam Thargye told SBS World News his niece, a nun, went missing in Ganzi in eastern Tibet during a protest three weeks ago.
An eyewitness to the protest says Mr Geshe Sonam’s niece and two other nuns were protesting against being forced to denounce the Dalai Lama.
The eyewitness says the protest turned violent when Chinese police arrived.
The monk’s plea coincides with an Amnesty International report stating more than 1000 people have been detained since the March riots.
