Washington DC: Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay arrived at Washington DC this Tuesday morning. He was received by Representative Ngodup Tsering, Office of Tibet, Washington DC, Office of Tibet staffers, and Capital Area Tibet Association members.
Dr Sangay met with Senator Thom Tillis, a Republican Senator for North Carolina. This was their first meeting, and coincidentally both of them travelled to Boston prior to arriving in DC this week. After Sikyong explained the human rights concerns of Tibet, Senator Tillis agreed to co-sponsor the Tibet Policy and Support Act of 2019 (S.2539). Senator Tillis expresses deep concern of China and China’s influence on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the rest of the world.
Later in the afternoon, Dr Sangay presided over a Senate Staffer meeting in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Hearing Room. 15 staffers arrived to learn about Tibet and TPA-2019. Staffers were allowed to ask questions after the lecture; staffers asked questions about the social grid system, Xinjiang, human rights, and Xi Jinping.
Sikyong and the Representative later met with state department officials, Thomas Vajda and Laura stone, both Deputy Assistant secretaries at South and Central Asian Affairs, and Graham Mayer, India Director.
