Auckland: A peaceful protest against the ongoing Beijing Winter Olympics was held in front of the Consulate General of the Chinese government in Auckland on Friday, 4 February. The protest was organised by the Tibetan community of Auckland. Over 50 people took part in the protest which was also joined by members of Sino-Tibetan Friendship Association, and Friends of Tibet.
The protesters raised the issue of China’s abuse of human rights and freedom of speech in Tibet, East Turkistan, Southern Mongolia, and Hong Kong. Noted Chinese intellectual and dissident Chen Wejian, who is the editor of Beijing Spring newspaper and former editor of New Zealand Shimpo newspaper also took part and addressed the protesters.
