CTA Pays Tribute to Peaceful Tibetan Demonstrators of 1989

The prayer service was led by Geshe Dawa, former abbot of Namgyal Monastery, 8 March 2016.

DHARAMSHALA: The Department of Religion and Culture of the Central Tibetan Administration, held an hour-long prayer service this morning in remembrance of the sacrifices made by the peaceful Tibetan demonstrators who took part in the protests of 1989 in Tibet.

The prayer service was attended by members of the Kashag led by Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay, members of the Tibetan Parliament, Tibetan Justice Commissioners, staff of the Central Tibetan Administration and members of the public.

Hundreds of peaceful Tibetan demonstrators were killed after Chinese authorities declared martial law on 8 March 1989 and opened indiscriminate firing. The demonstrations began after a group of monks, nuns, and laypeople took to the streets to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day.

The prayer service is held annually on 8 March to recall and pay tribute to those Tibetans who have sacrificed their lives and limb for the greater cause of Tibet.
