LEH, Ladakh: Addressing a brief welcome reception for His Holiness the Dalai Lama at Shiwatsel palace in Leh on 28 June, His Holiness spoke about how the people of Himalayan regions such as Ladakh could make significant contributions in the promotion of secular ethics in India.
“One of my primary focus these days is the revival of Nalanda education in India. The Nalanda school of thought is hugely relevant to us these days. Its emphasis on secular ethics, epistemology, emotional science, philosophy is extremely noteworthy and should be taught in schools as part of regular syllabus,” His Holiness said.
“These ideas are also starting to gain a lot of attention in India these days. Therefore, I feel that, as followers of the Nalanda school, the people of Himalayan regions could play a significant role in the promotion of secular ethics in India. Hence, it is important that you study the Buddhist texts to have an in-depth knowledge of the same,” His Holiness said.
His Holiness also explained the unshakeable bond that he shares with the people of Ladakh as one of the primary reasons for his regular visits to Ladakh. He further explained the arid climate of Ladakh as beneficial to his health as compared to the torrential rains of Dharamshala during monsoon.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama further informed them about his recent visit to the US for a regular medical check up. “The visit was part of an annual medical check up that I undergo over there. Two years ago, the doctors said there is a slight chance of prostrate cancer. However, this time they told me I am completely fine and there is no trace of the signs anymore,” His Holiness said, urging them not to worry.
His Holiness arrived in Ladakh following a successful visit to the US on 28 June 2017. His Holiness will be in Ladakh for over a month before returning to Dharamshala. During the stay, His Holiness will conduct Buddhist teachings, give public talks, participate in discussions on the connections between science and religion, and meet the Muslim community of Ladakh.
