His Holiness the Dalai Lama Congratulates North and South Korea for Pledging Peace and Denuclearisation

His Holiness the Dalai Lama congratulates North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in.

DHARAMSHALA: His Holiness the Dalai Lama has congratulated North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in on Monday for holding the historic summit to promote peace and denuclearise the Korean peninsula.

In his congratulatory note, His Holiness wrote, “As an avowed campaigner for demilitarization throughout the world and the complete elimination of all nuclear weapons, I wholeheartedly welcome the outcome of your discussions to secure lasting peace on the Korean peninsula.

“Seeing the immense suffering caused by war and violence in so many different parts of the world is deeply distressing. What [you] have shown is that taking a genuinely peaceful approach and entering into dialogue is the only way to achieve friendship, trust and peace.

“I profoundly hope these positive developments will contribute to concerted efforts to do away with these dreadful weapons everywhere and secure genuine and enduring peace in our world.

“I am confident the international community solidly supports the positive steps that [you] have taken,” His Holiness concluded.

In a historic summit, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the demilitarised zone between the two countries on 27 April and agreed to work toward a peace agreement to formally end the Korean War 68 years after it began. In joint statement, the two leaders pledged to work towards the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and establish peace.
