His Holiness the Dalai Lama opens Tibet Expo in Mumbai

MUMBAI: His Holiness the Dalai Lama today inaugurated the Tibet Museum’s Photo Exhibition on Indo-Tibet Relations titled “India and Tibet – Ancient Ties, Current Bonds” and Self-immolation in Tibet titled “The Burning Question – Why are Tibetans Turning into Self-immolations? The exhibition was part of four-days Tibet Festival held here at Somaiya Vidyavihar in Ghatkopar, Mumbai. The Festival is held along with His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s teaching at the Somaiya Vidyavihar to create awareness among the general public, especially Indian people, about Tibet’s rich culture, history and the current situation in Tibet.

The exhibition on Indo-Tibet Relations features pictorial presentation on historical relations between Tibet and India from Tibet’s 33rd King Songtsen Gampo till today and how this relations matters to both Indians and Tibetans. It also portrays background information about the ongoing wave of self-immolation inside Tibet. Along with photo exhibitions, the Tibet Museum also screened documentary movies on Tibet in the evening, to inform and highlight various aspects of Tibet, Tibetans and their way of life.

The 4-day Tibet Festival also features free medical camp by the Tibetan Medical and Astro. Institute where the visitors avail free consultation and medicines, exhibition on medical herbs, astrological diagrams and pictures. Other highlights include Sand Mandala preparation by Drepung Loselling Monastery, Mundgod, Butter Sculpture by Gyumed Monastery, Hunsur, Exhibition cum Sale of Book by Library of Tibetan Work and Archives, Word Carving by Kartop Wood Carving, Dharamshala, Thangka Painting by Tashi Tsering, Mundgod and Exhibition cum Sale of Tibetan Handicraft by Tibetan Cooperative Society, Mundgod.

The Tibet Festival was organised by Somaiya Vidyavihar under the guidance of Samir S Somaiya, trustee and President of the Institute and coordinated by two members of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Karma Yeshi and Yangchen Dolkar.
