Berlin: Claudia Roth, the Vice President of the German Parliament officially received Dr Lobsang Sangay, the President of the Central Tibetan Administration at the German Parliament yesterday.

Welcoming Dr Sangay, Claudia Roth expressed that it was an honour to receive Dr Sangay in her official function as a Vice President of the German Parliament and not as Claudia Roth, a good friend.

Expressing her sadness over reality of the situation in Tibet with religious persecution and human rights violation that led to the self-immolation of 152 Tibetans calling for freedom in Tibet, Claudia Roth iterated that if democracy and human rights are thought of and talked about then there is also a need to strengthen the necessity to re-discuss and to pressure China over the human right abuses. “ We cannot forget the Tibetan people because to forget them would be killing them,” she said.

She further expressed the need to stop China from using its influence to pressure governments, ministers, industries. “We cannot allow the repression of the Tibetan people and their religion,” she said. Claudia Roth last visited Dharamsala in 2015, where she joined the official function commemorating the 56th Tibetan National Uprising Day.

Thanking Claudia Roth for officially receiving him at the parliament, Dr Sangay highlighted the worsening human rights situation in Tibet and spoke of the deteriorating ecosystem of Tibet, which poses a great threat not only to its immediate neighbour, but to the world at large as the third pole of the world and as the largest repository of fresh water after the two poles.

Dr Sangay also met with the former ambassador of Germany to China and Japan. Dr Sangay also visited the ICT office and TID office in Berlin during his visit.
