23 June 2008: Karze (Ch: Ganzi) County, Karze “TAP”, Kham (incorporated into Chinese province of Sichuan) – Villages people are being intimidated against staging any protest.
“Work teams” from the county government office have been visiting the villages, including Me-nyenda village near Bheri monastery, in Karze county on and around June 23. People are being threatened with their lives against staging any protest.

At least three protests were carried out in Karze county on June 22 as reported earlier. Names of two people can now be confirmed who were severely beaten and arrested by the People’s Armed Police (PAP) for participating in a peaceful protest led by over 20 people-some sources said it is by over 10 people-at over 3:00 p.m. local time on June 22. They are Palmo, a 17-year girl, and Karma Wangchuk, a 29-year man. Names of other arrestees are still awaited.

Jampa Choephel, a 25-year youth from Me-nyenda village in Karze county, staged a pro-independence protest at around 11:00 a.m. on June 21 while carrying the Tibetan flag in his right hand and pro-independence banner in his left. His head was covered with a scarf attached with a photo of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
During the protest, he shouted slogans such as “Tibet is an independent country”, and “long live His Holiness the Dalai Lama”. He was severely beaten and arrested by the PAP.

Palden Nyima, a 27-year youth from Karze county, was severely beaten and arrested for staging a peaceful protest on June 18. It is unknown how many were with him during the protest.

Passang Dolma, a 32-year woman from Yartoe Lamna village in Karze county, carried out a pro-independence protest in front of county government office on June 18.
Just before she left her home for the protest, she kept a message that “our parents had passed away hopefully waiting for all these years for the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and to get independence for Tibet and freedom to Tibetans. I too have promised them to contribute something in realising their hope. So, I have no regret even if my life meets its end in doing so”.
She was badly beaten and arrested by the PAP during her protest.

Khando, a 25-year girl, daring the harsh and windy rainfall, staged a peaceful protest at around 5:00 p.m. on June 18 in Karze county. During the protest, she shouted slogans such as “Tibet is an independent country”, and “long live His Holiness the Dalai Lama”. She was severely beaten and arrested by the Public Security Burean (PSB).

Palden Wangyal, a 20-year youth, was severely beaten and arrested by the PAP for staging a peaceful protest while flying the Tibetan flag in front of Karze county government office on June 18.
On the same day, a layperson and a monk from southern Karze were also beaten and arrested by the PAP for carrying out a peaceful protest in front of Karze county government office.
Although, many peaceful protests were reported to have taken place at Karze county government office on June 15, 18, 19, 20, and 21, it has been very difficult in getting detailed information due to very strict restrictions imposed specially in Karze county by the Chinese authorities.

Karze (Ch: Ganzi) County, Karze “TAP”, Kham (incorporated into Chinese province of Sichuan) – Four monks from Khangmar monastery severely beaten and arrested for staging a peaceful protest
Jamgha Phuntsok (an 18-year), Yeshi Dorjee (a 32-year), Jampa Dorjee (an 18-year), and Solu, all four monks from Khangmar (or Khanang) monastery in Karze county, carried out a peaceful protest while flying the Tibetan flag and scattering many leaflets in front of county government office on June 9. They were severely beaten and arrested by the Public Security Burean (PSB).

The PSB has arrested Yangchen Khando, from Pa village in Karze county, on around June 9 for allegedly sharing information about the protests being held in Karze county. No detailed information is available.

Ngawang Lhundup and Kal Nyima, both monks from Karze monastery in Karze county, were also severely beaten and arrested by the PAP for holding a peaceful protest in front of county government office on around June 19.

Ngaba (Ch: Aba) County, Ngaba “TAP”, Amdo (incorporated into Chinese province of Sichuan) – Se monastery in a critical situation
A huge contingent of PAP and others arrived at Se monastery in Ngaba county on June 10 and arrested a group of monks. They also thoroughly raided the monastery and confiscated the photos and portraits of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
They continue to harass, on the following days on June 11 and 12, the monks who have been on 3-year retreat, and restricted the monks of minor age from living in the monastery. Se monastery is in danger of having no monks.

Ngag-gha and Dorjee Tashi, from Gyensang village in Karze county, were arrested later for helping the peaceful protestors when they were being arrested by the PAP for staging protests at county government office. Detailed information is not available.
